My NOT SO lovely Porch

I remember when we first looked at our house thinking "I don't really like the front porch. Why did they paint it red?" Today my thought is more along the lines of "I HATE MY PORCH." The paint is pealing and I don't know if you got it the first time so let me repeat myself... IT'S RED. I guess that would be cool if it looked good but my house is light yellow with brick and my porch is the color of ketchup. This eyesore needs to go away! The problem is I'm totally not a decorator. What do I do with a cement porch that is covered in pealing red paint? What will look good with my light yellow house? I think the natural cement color would be my preference but there are so many layers of paint that I don't know if it would be possible to get them all off. Should we just paint it another color? What color?

I'm looking for advice people. Any tips or suggestions on how to cover up the ugly red with something that will actually increase our curb appeal? PLEASE HELP ME!!

Here is a picture of the front of our house back in 2007 when we bought it. The porch is even uglier now.

I don't know, but I'm going to be checking your comments to find out because we have a painted front porch too...it was bright green, and it has since been painted the color of cement but if you step too hard it peels and the lovely green pokes it's ugly eyes through. It has probably 5 layers or more of the cement color and it still shows through, just fyi.

Okay so this is my suggestion you don't have to take it but I think the reason why your paint is peeling is you need a primer on it. Plus to get rid of the red you need a fresh start, a new slate. So I say prime your porch first (white) and then paint it a light gray or a light tan/brown. But good luck crossing my fingers for ya!!!

Talk to Bert about this, seriously, he is a paint expert and he has painted the rest of your house.

If you want just the plain cement (painted porches will need to be repainted every 6 months no matter what you do), he can recommend a chemical stripping agent to get the paint off and you can borrow his wire brushes. Just make sure you wear good gloves. The last porch he stripped he had chemical burns all over his hands and arms.

I'm going with you on this, that stripping it down to the cement would probably be the easiest to maintain. Sounds like a project!
