Vitamin C, Friend or Foe?

Soooo, when I woke up this morning I was feeling kinda sick so I decided to stay home from work. A head cold has been going around at work and I want to try to beat it if I can. Sheldon being the nice husband that he is told me that I should take some vitamin C and zinc. The conversation went a little something like this:

Sheldon: You need to take some vitamin C and zinc.
Michelle: Yeah, I guess, will you please get it for me?
Sheldon: Sure. (brings me the meds and a glass of water)
Michelle: Aren't I supposed to take this stuff with food? I don't think I'm supposed to take it on an empty stomach.
Sheldon: Oh no, you can take it on an empty stomach, it's fine. While you're at it... take 4 vitamin C pills.
Michelle: What??? That's crazy! I don't want to OD or something!
Sheldon: You can't OD on vitamin C. Just take 4. You'll just pee it out. (Hands me 4 vitamin C pills and a zinc pill.)

So, Sheldon went to work and I went back to bed. 40 minutes later I woke up feeling a little queezy. To make a long story short I have thrown up 16 times this morning!!! Guys, it's 9 am. So, I'm pretty sure I'm not pregnant... and pretty sure I should not have taken 4 vitamin C pills on an empty stomach. I'm not trying to have a pitty party, but my bouts of barfing are so intense I can't breath in between wretches. LAME. Plus, I am having OTHER symptoms.

So, my loving husband is sitting in class right now totally unaware of the fact that I am sick in more ways than one. (I am in between toilet visits right now so I thought I'd vent to Jen because I know she will read this within the next two hours.) :)

Sheldon is luckily not in any medical classes this semester otherwise I would have some serious doubts about the quality of education at LDS BC. But, I know he wasn't trying to kill me he just wanted me to have lots of vitamin C so I will feel better soon.

Any thoughts on if it truly was the vitamin C and why vitamin C would make me so violently ill?

Woah... gotta go.

Hey shell, in my foods class I learned that you can OD on vitamin C and that you shouldn't have more than 2,000 mg of vitamin C a day, I will have to check the stats when I get home but I am pretty sure that is right. Plus with all the fortified foods we eat cereal and juice and everything else we do pretty well with having a good store of vitamin C. You should also never take anything on an empty stomach if anything you should drink lots of water if you can't hold the food down. It won't kill you but I hope that you feel better soon. Good luck!

I'm gonna have to disagree with Mr. or Mrs. Delphinich here. Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin. Sheldon is almost right in saying that you can't OD on it and that you'll just pee out the extra. Fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E, and K) can be more toxic because your body has a harder time getting rid of them.
On the other hand, there hasn't really been any scientific evidence that vitamin C can help prevent or get rid of a cold. Vitamins can help keep you healthy in other ways, but in MODERATION. The next time your husband hands you 5 pills of something, take four of them and start filling his orifices. Always use the recommended dosage.
There are some medications that require an empty stomach, but food does soften the absorbtion of most things.
A cold is viral, so rest and fluids are the best antidote. Of course, my wife puked morning, noon, and night for about 6 months during her first pregnancy, so don't rule that out either. Cheers!

I am sorry when I wrote my post I was teaching school and in teacher mode, it came out kind of harsh. Sheldon did a good job telling you to take the vitamin C and he was just trying to help. There is a daily limit to the amount of vitamin C that you intake and if you take to much in a short period of time your body will react to get it out, hence the hours in the bathroom. The reason I said to take it with water is that it is water soluble so if you take the four tablets that sheldon told you to take over several hours your body will right it self. Thank for clearing that up Jon and Becky. :)

Just for fun I thought I'd leave my two cents, mostly because I think this episode was tragic yet funny. After you told me about this I looked up vitamins on WebMD. This is what it said:

"Water-soluble vitamins travel freely through the body, and excess amounts usually are excreted by the kidneys. The body needs water-soluble vitamins in frequent, small doses, and these vitamins are not as likely as fat-soluble vitamins to reach toxic levels. However, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, choline, and vitamin C have upper consumption limits. Vitamin B6 at high levels over a long period of time has been shown to cause irreversible nerve damage."

Well there you go. I am impressed you ate dinner and dessert last night after all that quality time in the bathroom.

You know... when you start posting everyday, I miss a couple, cause I look at my Blogroll and think.... "Well she won't have posted, so why look." And then I miss out on extremely interesting posts like this one.

I am a living testament that you can't die from Vitamin C. When I was at my grandparents my cousin and I locked ourselves in the bathroom and each ate a Costco size bottle of Vitamin C... and look I am here to tell the tale.

Sorry you puked your guts out yesterday... maybe you are prego.

To my defense, I was really tired and cranky that morning, I wasn't trying to knock off my wife, I was trying to help. As I thought about it while at work after hearing about the puke I realized when I think I am getting sick I take two tablets of vitamin C in the morning and two at night. I also weigh almost twice as much as Michelle. To reply to Jons comment, I have heard that vitamin C can't prevent a cold, but taking it can't hurt either, unless you listen to me and take 4 of them, plus a zinc tablet.
